Bring your lunch and enjoy an hour with this long-standing booktalk group. Each week, Books Sandwiched In hosts a different speaker to talk about a book-related topic. Coffee and tea provided by the Friends of the Library. The November schedule is as follows:
Nov 5: Sylvanus Slaughter - "The Night of Shooting Stars," a tribute to the jazz of the late 50s-an original work
Nov 12: Betsey Carson - "The Gathering" by Anne Enright, a story about several generations of an Irish Family
Hope to see you there!
Come to the Thornton Library every Saturday this Fall from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m to play the wonderful and challenging game of Chess. Beginners and players of all skills are welcome. Even if you've never played before, this is a great place to learn (you can even look for books about chess in the 794.1 non-fiction sections of our Juvenile and Adult collections).
For a great online resource, please also check out http://www.chessgames.com/: this site has a searchable database of historical chess matches and even information about current chess news and tournaments.
The storytime season begins again the second week of September, on Monday September 10th.
Check out our Storytime page for a full schedule at all of our branches.
The 2007 Summer Reading Program was a HUGE success. There were 33 different events that were held at our Main and South Branch (the last one even had ice cream which was provided by the Junior Woman's Club!). Also, hundreds of books were read by new readers (mystery books, to coincide with our theme, of course, and all sorts of miscellaneous).
In fact, over 12,000 Juvenile books and nearly 1500 Young Adult books were checked out from our libraries in the months of June and July combined!
So be sure to check back next summer when an even bigger and better Summer Reading Program kicks off on Tuesday June 24th, 2008! And in the meantime, keep reading books, keep playing games, and -- above all else -- keep learning.
